The 2019 BHBIA Annual Conference was held at the De Vere Beaumont Estate in Windsor. The event attracted around 280 delegates from across the healthcare spectrum and invited attendees to explore some of the most prominent emerging issues in the sector, such as chronic condition management, customer centric pharmacies and the quality and sustainability of healthcare market research.

BOBI awards 2019 THIN

As part of the event, the BOBI (Best of British Intelligence) Awards were presented, with THIN recognised as ‘Highly Commended’ in the ‘Best Use of Innovation’ category. Our recognised project explained how machine learning can be applied in order to anonymise the free text data to allow advancements to be made and new insights delivered to those in the medical arena.

Free text comments are important as they often detail information regarding early symptoms of diseases and patient experiences that are not recorded in coded data. The use of anonymised free text data at scale would be highly innovative with the impact being be felt across the healthcare and life sciences industries. Free text data allows users to enhance their capabilities within the boundaries of GDPR so that academic, internal, pharmaceutical and national research teams are empowered to undertake ground breaking research and help deliver the NHS Long Term Plan objective of using research and innovation to drive future patient outcome improvements.

While we are still in the initial stages of fully applying anonymised free text data from THIN, we are proud to have been ‘Highly Commended’ by the BOBI for this work and extend a huge thanks to the Cegedim Health Data team behind it.
